Charles Lightoller
Charles
was a Second Mate on the Titanic. He was going to be First Mate on the
Oceanic, but was demoted and had to change ships. He felt the collision and ran
out in his night clothes. Seeing nothing, he went back to bed. He later helped
people into lifeboats. Charles was very strict about the “women and children
first” rule. Then a wave swept him overboard and got stuck under the Titanic!
Luckily, he was pushed up by some warm air. He grabbed a hold of an Lightoller’s run didn’t stop there. His later achievements were: First Officer on Campania in 1915, Mate on Oceanic, and Captain of torpedo ships and RM Destroyers. He Won the Distinguished Service Cross twice, commanded Sundowner at age 66, and finished his career with rank of Commander. Charles Lightoller died at 78 on December 8, 1952.
