Ernest Edward Samuel Freeman

By: Silas Van Hoecke

Born in London in 1863, Ernest Edward Samuel Freeman was a sailor. There is not much known about his early life (or at least I don’t know much about his early life). He sailed on the Olympic. Later, though, he signed onto the Titanic, reporting his address as 5 Hampton Road, in London. Listed as Chief deck steward, he was actually a secretary for Bruce Ismay (head of the White Star Line), who was also sailing on the Titanic. He received a monthly wage of 3 pounds, 15 shillings. Ernest lost his life in the disaster. He was given an honorable burial because of Bruce Ismay’s feelings of guilt for not putting enough life boats on board.
