Elizabeth Gladys “Milliva” Dean
By: Nick Leyden

Elizabeth Gladys “Milliva” Dean was born on Feb. 2, 1912. She had parents by the name of Bertram and Georgette Dean. She also had a brother named Bertram Jr. Her family had been going to Wichita, Kansas from Southampton, England on a smaller ship but there was not enough coal, so they had to go on the Titanic. All of her family survived except for her father, which her mother accepted gravely.

A little while later, Milliva’s mother decided to go back on the Adriatic. On the way back, all the women fought with each other to nurse her so much the captain decreed that the 2nd and 3rd class women (excluding her mother) could only hold her for ten minutes.

When they got back to Southampton, her mother depended entirely on pension funds. Although they were poor, the children, Elizabeth and Bertram Jr., went to Greggs School where they made many friends. Milliva learned that she had been on the Titanic when she was 8 years old. She was told by her mother right before her mother remarried.

When Elizabeth Dean, grew up she joined the army for World War II as a scout in the 2nd division. She drew maps of where she and her division scouted. Milliva didn’t participate in any Titanic events until she was in her 70’s. After that, she went to every Titanic anniversary except for the 95th and the 96th due to a broken hip and loss of voice. Her brother Bertram died on the same day as the 80th anniversary.
