Eugene Patrick Daly
By: Cody Young

Eugene Patrick Daly was born in Athlone, Ireland on Tuesday, January 23rd, 1883.  His family was fairly big, and he was the oldest child.  His family and he were continuous church-goers.  When he was almost twelve, his father was hit in the head by a brick, thrown by a rioter.  His father died a few days later making Eugene the man of the house, which meant he had to get a job.  He got a job making two shillings a week at the Woollen Mills.

Eugene boarded at Queenstown as a third class passenger.  He was traveling with his cousin, Margaret Daly, and another woman from Athlone.  Later, when the Titanic was sinking, he saved Margaret and the other woman.  Both of the women survived.  It wasn’t that easy for Eugene to survive, though.  He jumped off the ship and found an upturned boat, which was Collapsible B.  He was seen unconscious, holding on to the boat, for eight hours in the freezing cold water.  He and many other people were saved by the Carpathia.

After the Titanic disaster, he testified before the limitation of liability hearings in 1915.  In 1921, Eugene’s mother was going to die, so Eugene and Lil (his future wife) got on a ship to go see her, and he was freaking out on the ship.  When they made it to Athlone, his mother was better and was not going to die.  He finally got married to Lil in St. Anthony’s Church in Greenpoint, Brooklyn in the early thirties.  He only had one daughter named Marion.  They wanted to move away to a different place, and there were so many people wanting them to move to certain places.  They finally decided to move to Galway.  Sadly, he died on October 31, 1965, and he was buried at St. Raymond’s Cemetery in the Bronx.
