Barbara Joyce West Dainton was born on May 24th, 1911in Dorset, England. She was ten months old when she was aboard the Titanic, making her one of the youngest passengers on board. Barbara was traveling with her mother, Ada, her father, Edwy, and her older sister, Constance. She and her family were traveling in second class on the Titanic.

Barbara and her family were all asleep when the Titanic hit the iceberg with a sudden jerk. Only her mother was awakened and startled by the sudden movement. The steward came in and forced Barbara, Constance, Ada, and Edwy to quickly put on warm clothes and come onto the deck. Barbara’s father quickly put Constance and Barbara into lifejackets and followed his wife to the deck.

After Barbara, Constance, and her mother were safely on lifeboat number ten. Their father went back to the cabin to get some warm milk. He came back to find his wife and children already in the water. He used a rope to lower the milk down to his wife and children.

Barbara, her sister, and her mother all survived the sinking. Her father did not. His body was never found. Barbara, Constance, and their mother sailed back to England on the Celtic. A few years after they came back to England, Barbara was sent to the Worshipful Boarding school in Purley, England.

After Barbara finished school and went to college, she became a governess to a Cornish family. She moved to Spain with them. Barbara stayed in Spain until the Spanish Civil War began. When this happened, Barbara went back to England to teach at a high school.

Barbara married Stanley Winder, a rugby player. They were married for thirteen years before he died in 1951. After Stanley died, Barbara remarried William Ernest Barrel Dainton. He died in 1990. Barbara died on October 16th, 2007. She was ninety-six years old.
