Virtual Worlds in a project done by the 4th, 5th and 6th graders at the Nieman Enhanced Learning Center in the Spring 2000.  We started the unit by reading some short stories and chapters from books that dealt with altered realities.  We read "Running of of Time" by Margaret Peterson Haddix, "All Summer in a Day" by Ray Bradbury, "The Hobbit" by JRR Tolkien, and "Below the Root" by Zilpha Keatley Synder.   After discussion Virtual Worlds the students broke up into pairs and trios and were given the following instructions:

Your assignment (if you choose to accept it) is to design a Virtual World, it can be realistic or imaginary, in the past, in the present or in the future.  It can be on land, in the air, under the ground or on or under the sea.  Your imagination will determine all the aspects of your world.  You are responsible for making a video presentation to the "Council of Virtual Worlds" as well as a display board and model.   You will need to complete all the work in the packet before you can start building.
