The Meaning of Mythology

Introduction

  • Mythology is not unique to one culture, but is common to nearly all cultures. You can find myths not only from Ancient Greece and Rome, but from Africa, Native American, Egypt, Japan, China . . . and many more cultures.

  • Myths are a way of explaining the unexplainable.  Some are based on fantastic beings, but some are based on known people and events and are a way of explaining and handing down history.

  • Mythology has had and still is having a significant impact and influence on our lives today.

  • Whether we look at myths as eternal truths, an exaggerations of true stories, or stories describing nature, mythology has much to teach us about our history, our world and ourselves.
