Global Positioning System:

GPS Journal Day 1
reported by: Russell G.

Andy S. and I worked with the GPS systems on our E.L. fieldtrips to the Shawnee Mission Indian Mission cemetery and the Fuller Family Cemetery. There, we used our GPS’s to map out the land. First we practiced using them at the E.L. center at Nieman Elementary. We figured out on our own how to mark waypoints, make tracks, and so on with little help from the manual. Once at the cemetery, we marked the edges of the cemeteries using a track, and we marked most of the individual gravestones with waypoints. I thought the experience was a fun way to learn about new technology.

General Information

GPS, short for Global Positioning System, is a system of 24 satellites that orbit the earth constantly measuring their positions. The GPS Device is a machine that sends and receives signals to and from the satellites in an effort to determine your current position. GPS devices were long used by boats and airplanes, but the technology has become so affordable, that consumers can now buy them for personal use. (source)
