Population:

        The population of Cambodia is about 11.6 million people.  They have the second smallest population in Southeast Asia. The majority of the Cambodians live in the lowland areas of Cambodia. 

 

Ancestry:

        Ninety percent of the population of Cambodia is Khemer. Other people living in Cambodia are Vietnamese, Cham, Chinese, and tribal Khemer.  Many of the Vietnamese settled during Vietnam’s rule of Cambodia.    

 

Family:

        Children are given a lot of freedom until they are 3 or 4 years old.  At the age of 5, they have to look after their younger siblings.  The husband is the head of the house.  Parents and matchmakers choose who their children will marry.  Old age brings high status.  Cambodians must respect their elders. 

 

Lifestyle:

     The majority of the Cambodians live in the lowland areas of Cambodia.  Cambodia’s small middle class includes business people and middle ranking government agents.
